How high up are the Northern Lights when you see it?

As said in another article the Northern Lights happens in an aurorae. This occurs between appr. 85 to  135 km above sea level, but some, especially the ray-like shapes, extend to several hundred kilometers up.

In comparison, the usual altitude for a jet aircraft is around 10km and the ozone layer lies between 20 and 30km so the Northern Lights showa almost at an altitude of satellites.

A consequence of its great height is that the aurora is visible at horizontal distances of several hundred kilometers. Thus an aurora over Bear Island will be visible from both Spitzbergen and Tromsø, and one over Tromsø can be seen in the northern sky from central Norway.

It’s just spectacular to see it, and if you happen to be “just under one” when it happens, you’re going to be so spoiled…
